Florida Tech Parade

By Steve Kinnaird

OUTSTANDING!!!!!!  We had 21, that’s right 21 Mustangs show up for the Florida Tech Home Coming Parade, 17 members and 4 guests. Not having my ’68 Mustang road ready yet, I was fortunate enough to represent Kelly Ford with a ’99 35th Anniversary Red Convertible. Thanks KELLY FORD!

We want to thank John & Marcia McAvey for letting us meet at their house early Saturday morning. From there we convoyed over to the staging area at 10:00AM. What an awesome sight. John & Marcia’s neighbor, acted as our personal traffic cop and held up traffic on Florida Ave. so that we could all stay together.

As we arrived at the staging area they had no idea what to do with so many of us. The never expected so many Mustangs. We parked 2 and 3 deep just to get everyone in. We were parked next to the Space Coast Corvette Club. They had 5 Corvette’s in attendance. We had a good time ribbing each other, as normal. They are a great group to hang around with.

The parade coordinators asked to seat the King & Queen nominees in as many convertibles as they could. I think we had about 8 Mustangs carrying Kings & Queens. But now we need to get the convertibles out of the parking pile and lined up for the parade. Shuffle, shuffle, move, move. We got it done. And then had to move some cars again to allow some school buses to pass through.

The parade route was modified to run along Babcock Street this year. A longer route than previous years, this offered more exposure. The students were great. I had the pleasure of escorting the King & Queen nominees for the College Players, the on campus theatrical group. Their float was filled with all kinds of actors and even a drunk producer. A real fun bunch.

We completed the parade route. Some drivers went on their way while others stayed to enjoy the Bar-B-Q lunch that was provided to everyone that participated in the parade. If you didn’t stay, you missed a good lunch.

I stuck around waiting for the awards to be presented. While chatting with some of the other participants, I was informed that we did not place this year. I confirmed this with Diane Deaton, the coordinator, before leaving. She told me that Sable Elementary Schools Marching Band took 1st Place, the Clowns took 2nd Place and that an Elementary School float took 3rd. She did thank us for such an outstanding turn out and hoped that we would continue to be part of this annual event.

I would like to thank everyone that took the time out of the weekend to be there. The following members were in attendance. John McAvey, Marcia McAvey, Steve Kinnaird, Tom Sullivan, Bruce Langmaack, Dennis Reardon, Kurt Heber, Rob Heber, Jim Carlton, Ray & Lola Huskey, Jim Duck, Dennis Wilt, Denton Clark, Burke Justice, Jim Menke, Charles Elliott & Linda Schylaske. We would also like to recognize our guests that were in attendance. Craig Mormile, Tommy Ratcliffe, Lenny Sutton & Andy Boldin. We invited them to join the SCMC and hope to see more of these guys in the future. Again THANKS to everyone for coming out.
